Historic Homes Tour
August 3, 2008
This interesting
tour will include the following:
- Ashland -The
Henry Clay Estate. The estate’s status as a National Historic Landmark
reflects the prominence of the statesman who developed this beautiful
property and lived here for 40 years. The Italianate mansion contains many
Clay family items and the outstanding collection of outbuildings is well
worth the visit.
- Hopemont -
The Hunt-Morgan House. This Federal style house, which was built in 1814,
has been home to 3 famous Kentuckians. John Wesley Hunt was the first
millionaire west of the Allegheny Mountains. General John Hunt Morgan was
known as “The Thunderbolt of the Confederacy. Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan is the
only Kentuckian to have won the Nobel Prize which he received for his work
in genetics. The house contains many family heirlooms and the original
staircase up which General Morgan is reputed to have ridden his mare “Black
Bess” to kiss his mother good-bye on his way to the war.
- Waveland, a
Kentucky state historic site. Built in 1844, this Greek Revival style home
was the home of the Joseph Bryan family, Joseph Bryan came through the
Cumberland Gap into Kentucky with Daniel Boone. The grounds at Waveland are
the setting for original slave quarters and a small family cemetery.
